PET v.s. rPET

Polyethylene Terephthalate

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) has been widely sought after for food packaging mainly due to its excellent barrier to water and moisture but also barrier to oxygen which allows for taste and aroma to be better preserved. It is also crack resistant and is highly durable. Generally speaking, a PET cup or container can withstand heat up to 71 degrees celcius.

Although Polypropylene (PP) have similar properties, PET has much better clarity. It can be made into crystal clearness, a property that is liked by many retailers to better showcase their food and beverage which are often fancy looking these days.
When PET is recycled into rPET, it has the exact properties. PET bottles are the most widely recycled in the world. It can be recycled into recycled-PET but also into other fields such as being spun into fibres for carpets and apparel.

PP

Polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP) is a very tough and rigid polyester. It also has high resistance to chemicals, acids, alkalis and heat, so is often used for packing fresh food and microwaveable ready-to-heat meals.

It can be made to optical clear but unlike PET it cannot achieve crystal clear visibility. However, it can be dyed into any color.

PP can be recycled but into new material for non-food purposes only.

PS vs HIPS

Polystyrene and High Impact Polystyrene

Polystyrene (PS) is commonly seen in traditional takeout packaging in form of a styrofoam (white foam containers and cups) but it is naturally clear. It is popular for its insulate property; keeps hot food hot and cold food cold. However it is currently less popular as it is not recyclable.

It is also lightweight but relatively brittle and has a lower heat resistance, which makes it ideal for dry and cold food which are not to be heated. It’s often used for bakery and salads.

PLA

Polylactic Acid

Polyalactic Acid is made from lactic acid which can be produced from renewable feedstock such as corn, starch and sugar. Under specific environmental conditions, PLA can break itself down into natural elements in as little as one month. It is currently a niche option but it has already received significant attention as it is biodegradable and recyclable.

It is used for short shelf-life food packaging such as containers, drinking cups, salad and sundae cups.

Additives

We are in the works of experimenting with additives to give our Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polypropylene (PP) Anaerobic Biodegradability i.e. allowing for decomposition in landfill condition with ASTM D5511 standards.
